DECODABLE Mats for Reading Work

French decoding activity: read decodable words and sentences to improve reading skills. These mats will help you offer lots of decoding practice.

ABOUT THE DECODING MATS

Each mat focuses on one phoneme represented by one grapheme so that students concentrate on one sound-grapheme correspondence.

Silent letters are greyed out and ”liaisons” are indicated with a symbol.

Students warm up by reading individual words from the box at the top of the page. "Heart words" are marked with a heart symbol, and their letters aren’t grayed out even if they include silent letters so as not to overwhelm students with too much information.

After warming up, students read the two sentences at the bottom of the page.

Students are expected to already be familiar with some sounds.

Each set is more complex than the previous one.

For example, for the first set, students should already know the following phonemes/graphemes, and "heart words":

  • Phonemes/graphemes: a /a/, e /ə/, i /i/, o /o/, u /y/, d /d/, j /ʒ/, l /l/, m /m/, t /t/.
  • Heart words: est, c’est, un, aime, avec, elle.

They should also be familiar with silent letters.

For the second set, they should know the phonemes/graphemes and "heart words" from set 1, and more sounds and other "heart words".

This bundle includes 4 sets (= 36 printable decodable mats)
